Wal-Mart,a highly successful U.S.based mega-discount chain,has included toys in its range for a decade or more
A few Cristmas seasons ago,many major toy suppliers to the U.S. were observed making short-term exclusive deals with specialty toy retailers in the U.S. who were having difficulty competing with Wal-Mart.Under dhese deals,the toy suppliers agreed to supply their toys only to the specialty toy retailer, and not Wal-Mart during the Cristmas season.
If Wal-Mart was doing better than the specialty toy retailer,why would these toy suppliers make a such deals?
The suppliers were afraid that Toy R Us was going to go down for the count and at the time Kmarts future looked uncertain to say the least. Wal-Mart is the worlds largest retailer and has been the #1 toy seller with a market share in the mid 30% range. If both Kmart and Toy R Us had went down it would not have been hard to see a future with Wal-Mart having a market share well above 50% in the United States and even more negoation power over the toy vendors than it already has. Wal-Mart always pushes its suppliers for lower prices, which can hurt their profits.
